To commemorate the International Day of Menstrual Hygiene, a Bauchi based Civil Society Organisation (CSO), Nurture and Empower Her Initiative (NEHI), with technical support from other CSOs that included: Afri-HUB, World Changers Exceptional Organisation (WOCEO) and UBUNTU Sisters on Friday 30th May 2025 hosted a crucial menstrual hygiene campaign, aimed at promoting awareness and education on menstrual health among young girls and boys of Immaculate Conception Secondary School Bauchi.
The Executive Director of NEHI Florence Uzoanya said that the campaign, which was attended by students and teachers, sought to break the stigma surrounding menstruation and equip young girls with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage their menstrual health effectively.
Uzoanya emphasized the importance of proper menstrual hygiene practices, including the use of sanitary pads, regular changing, and personal hygiene.
She also highlighted the need for girls to feel confident and comfortable during their menstrual cycles, and encouraged them to prioritize their health and well-being.
Also speaking on the side with our Correspondent, the Executive Director of WOCEO, Dr. Blessing Ogenyi said that the campaign is part of a broader effort to promote menstrual hygiene and health among young people.
Dr. Ogenyi said that, by educating girls about menstrual health, it is hope that the campaign would empower them to take control of their bodies and lives.
While sharing her thoughts on the activity, the guidance and counseling officer of the school Mrs. Cecilia Lawal commended the organisers of the campaign for their foresight in targeting the adolescents girls. She pointed that it was heartwarming to see even the boys absorbing the knowledge on menstrual hygiene.
Mrs. Lawal said that the school is always open for collaboration with partners so long as such partnerships would add value to the lives of their students.
All the students interviewed by our correspondent expressed their delight at participating in the enlightenment campaign with some of the boys and girls saying that they are better informed on menstrual hygiene now.
Some of the topics presented to the over 100 students included:
-Overview of Puberty/Menstruation/ Signs before first period/
-Pre-menstrual Syndrome/Ovulation symptoms and Treatment/Heathy and Unhealthy period
-Breast Cancer/Lumps
-Common Myth and truth about Menstruation
-Explaining Sanitary Products/Proper way of wearing a Pad
-Menstrual Cycle and Flow
-Vagina Infection, Prevention and Cleanliness
